Eradicating crime in it’s entirely is nearly impossible. With that being said, there is potential to decrease crime and victimization within the communities. Ways to reduce the crime and victimization would include better policing and other prevention strategies. In my personal opinion, I believe that the get-tough on crime policy is the best policy to decrease crime, which in return will decrease victimization. For example this kind of policy against crime would be the three strikes law. With the three strikes law I would incorporate rehabilitation programs for the offenders since punishment alone is not very effective. Two theories of victimization that can be explained above would be the lifestyle theory and the deviant place theory. The lifestyle theory explains victimization as the victim causing the incident because of how they live, (Argosy University, 2016). Examples of this could be living in bad neighborhoods and hanging out with the wrong crowd of people. Living in bad neighborhoods and hanging out with the wrong crowd of people means that there are increased risks of criminal activity occurring. By people still choosing to live in those areas, they are validating the lifestyle theory of victimization. The other theory known as the deviant place theory is similar to the lifestyle theory. This theory explains victimization as the victimization being due to that person being in a bad area. This does not mean the person lives in a bad area or hangs out in a bad area but simply that they may have been in a bad area at the time of the victimization, (Argosy University, 2016).
