In the novel Raskonikov goes to publicity confess but then decided to tell the police instead. "Go to the crossroads, bow down to the people, kiss the earth, for you have sinned against it too, and say aloud to the whole world “I am a murderer”. He knelt down in the middle of the square, bowed down to the earth, and kissed that filthy earth with bliss and rapture." (Sonia 488) Sonya wanted Raskonikov to do this because once everyone knows what he has done they will give him either accept that he is ready to be redeemed or give him punishment which will help with his redemption. This is the most crucial aspect of redemption because you can not be forgiven for what you did unless you are forgiven by everyone.
The novel shows us that redemption is extremely hard to achieve and requires very hard leaps and Perseverance to be obtained. This is done throught self realization self forgiveness and public confession. In the novel Raskonikov achieves redemption in the end of the novel while he is serving his time is Siberia. But another major character Svidrigilov does not achieve redemption and instead ends his own life to cope with what he did.
