Over the past decade the topic of marriage has been continuously evolving; one could say it is even being redefined. Michele Bachmann, a member of the United States House of Representatives who represents Minnesota’s 6th district, has made radical statements on the topic. During an appearance on the radio show “Faith & Liberty” Bachmann says, “For all of the thousands of years of recorded human history, about 5,000 years, there is no instance of any culture, nation or tribe ever having as the established standard for marriage anything other than between man and woman. It may have been multiple women and a man, it may have been something like that, but it was always between men and women.” (McCarthy). We’ll just assume both are fertile and they go about things the old fashioned way. Nine months later, they have a baby. Now, for our same-sex couple, things aren’t as easy. The reasons are obvious for this, but, luckily, they still have opportunities to raise a family. One common way would be to adopt a child. Unfortunately for our couple, they live in Florida where the law specifically bans homosexuals from adopting children. Florida, Michigan, Mississippi and Utah all ban adoption by homosexuals ("Same-Sex Adoption Laws By State."). Although marriage wouldn’t allow our couple to adopt in the previously stated states, it would allow them to adopt in some other states where there isn’t a specific ban against homosexuals, but a ban exists against unmarried couples. The notion that a child would do better in some institution than with two caring parents is absurd. It may not be the classic mother and father setup, but it still provides a loving and caring environment for a child that would otherwise not have
