Red Tails Critique The color of ones skin does not make them unable to carry out tasks. Throughout the movie, Red Tails by Anthony Hemingway, we see a story unfold as a group of African American pilots struggle with their identity. They are viewed by the whites around them as unfit to fly, but through their struggle they show the world their capabilities. Red Tails depicts a story of the African American pilots in Italy, in 1944 during WWII, who are given a chance to pass the expectations of the people around them. As they battle a war against the discrimination on the ground, they also take to the sky to change the flow of the war. They give up their chances for glory kills to save the lives of the bombers that they escort, changing the outcome of many battles. He even depicted the soldiers as lounging around, gambling, finding women, and playing sports while waiting for orders. The true reality was they had command issues, every so often a new white officer came into command just to be promoted and moved out for another new white rookie commander to take his place. Hemingway did portray the correct visuals throughout the movie to coincide with the time era presented. He showed how at the beginning the Tuskegee airmen only were able to use second tier equipment. For example they flew P-47s, which were old and consequently run down. The Tuskegee airmen would only fly miles behind the front lines doing recon missions and taking out lone trucks and trains that they could spot. Till they proved them selves and started protecting the US bombers. After proving themselves they upgraded there planes to P-51s. He was even was able to
