Purpose and Background Cells divide in two ways, mitosis and meiosis. Mitosis is used to produce cells that are genetically identical to the parent cell for growth, asexual reproduction, or repair after injury. Cells that are produced by mitosis are diploid, meaning that they have two complete sets of chromosomes, one from each parent. Meiosis is used to produce haploid cells that have only one set of chromosomes, a mix of chromosomes from both parents. Meiosis produces cells that are genetically unique from their parent cells.…
For this experiment, a few scientists are researching how different flavors/colors of sports drinks effect the amount of red 40 dye in each drink. The independent variable in the experiment is the flavors of Gatorade (a brand of sports drinks) used, while the dependent variable is the concentration of dye the sports drinks contain. The constant variable is the spectrophotometer, the amount of liquid used, and the same type of cuvette. The controlled variable is only using water. In order to determine which drink would have the greatest concentration of red 40 dye, the scientists must first understand what it actually is.…
I believe that the fountain drinking water at Kishwaukee College and the water of reverse osmosis will have greater bacteria than the tape water of my friend’s house. Materials 10 nutrient agar plates 3 sterile 1L bottles Membrane filter system Alcohol and Tweezer Bunsen burner Method First, I labeled the 10 agar plates by one negative control, 3 reverse osmosis, 3 fountain drinking water at kishwaukee, and 3 tape water of friend’s house.…
1. Which impurity particles are larger, the one causing the water to be cloudy or the one causing the water to smell? Explain. The common problems with water are colors, smells and tastes.…
These daphnid cultures were fed 2 mL of algae (Selenastrum capricornutum) containing 3.0 x 107 cells per mL on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The water was changed every Friday. Once a month, 1 mL of a yeast and trout chow…
Red Dye 1 Red dye 1 is most likely a polar covalent molecule since we have found that it dissolves into water but does not break apart into ions. Just because it dissolves in water does not make it solely polar covalent, but since it has a relatively low conductivity, 534 mS/cm in the 0-20000 range, then it most likely is polar covalent. This is further confirmed with the fact that it does not react with NaOH, NaCl, or AgNO3, all ionic substances. The red dye does not react with NaOH since there was no color change when added, and the conductivity simple rose as the NaOH was added, due to the fact the excess ions were being added to the solution and not reaction at all.…
Population Dynamic Lab Report Purpose: Analyze graphs to determine the population size of two marine species. Explain how predation, birth, and death rates impact marine populations. Describe how biotic and abiotic factors influence marine populations. Research: 1. Prey Initial Size: The starting number of prey.…
Introduction The Chesapeake Bay that is 200 miles long is considered the largest estuary in the United States. It is home to more than 17 million people (NOAA). Baltimore, one of the most important North Atlantic port is located on the Chesapeake Bay. Oysters are one of the biggest resources of the Chesapeake bay.…
Introduction: The purpose of this lab was to use the absorbance of light through a solution to determine the concentration of Blue Dye 1 in Cool Blue Gatorade. In today's society most people are health conscious and food coloring and dyes have been a controversial topic. Blue Dye 1 is one of the most popular FDA-approved dyes used in food such as fruits, sauces, and baking mixes. Such dyes are not limited to foods but also used in shampoos, detergents, and vitamins just to name a few (Hennessey).…
To determine the unknown’s morphology is the first step in narrowing down possible organisms. A MacConkey and Mannitol Salt Agar tests were conducted on the organism and revealed the following. No growth on the MacConkey plate resulting in a gram positive bacteria and the Mannitol Salt Agar result showed it could be Staphylococcus or Micrococcus. (1) A gram stain test was used in determining the shape, size and arrangement of the unknown bacteria (1). The unknown organism is heat fixed onto the slide, in order for the organism to be stained.…
The best place in Long Beach The Aquarium of the Pacific is the best place in Long Beach; it’s educational, fun, and entertaining. The Aquarium is educational for the following reasons; first, it features a collection of over eleven thousand animals, representing five-hundred different sea species. Secondly, these species range from the porcupine fish, giant octopus, and puffins, to the jellyfish, spider crabs, and so much more!…
Osmosis is the net movement of water towards higher concentration. In osmosis experiment, water likes to diffuse from an area of low-solute concentration to an area of high-solute concentration. The purpose of the osmosis experiment was to observe the diffusion of solutes and the osmosis of water through a semipermeable membrane, which was dialysis tubing. This experiment was done to examine, if the solution is hypertonic, hypotonic or isotonic.…
If one person’s inaction leads to the death of another, is he guiltier than someone who committed a violent act that results in a person’s death? In August Wilson’s Gem of the Ocean, Citizen Barlow stole a bucket of nails, but did not come forward when another man was accused. The man subsequently committed suicide due to the false accusation and the significance of being labeled a thief. Another character, Caesar Wilts, shoots and kills a man who was suspected of committing a crime. While both men’s actions resulted in the death of another; who, if either, is guiltier than the other?…
Aaron Ford Antonino English III 23 March 2017 Marine Biology Marine biology is a field in science that looks solely at the life of marine animals and plants. What is a marine biologist? A marine biologist is the study of oceans and the marine animals in the oceans that lve in our waters. They look at the organism behavior and interactions with the environment. The first research done on marine animals were by Aristotle 322bc.…
Does a Measurement Result in a True Value? Limitations of Measurements Elizabeth Lechtholz-Zey & Marisa Loredo 10/5/15 CHEM 101-08 Purpose To determine the differences in precision and accuracy in weighing 10 mL of water using a 50 mL beaker, a 10 mL graduated cylinder, and a 50 mL buret.
