The Atchafalaya River is a distributary of the Red River and Mississippi River section in part of the southern portion in central Louisiana. The Atchafalaya is a one hundred and thirty seven mile long distributary of the Mississippi and Red Rivers. The name "Atchafalaya" comes from the Choctaw language and translates to long river from hachcha, “river" and falaya, "long.”
During the fifteenth century the Mississippi River and the Red River were separated. These two rivers sat across from each other. The United States Congress said they needed the United States Army Corps of Engineers to build a control structure that would level out and control the flow of water down the Atchafalaya River. Congress wanted thirty percent of the entire flow down the Mississippi and the Red Rivers to be watched, moderated and taken care of. Louisiana commercial crawfish farmers provide eighty five percent of farm raised crawfish to Louisiana markets and for states across the nation. Louisiana’s crawfish farming industry has increased to include more than one thousand two hundred farms taking over more than one hundred and twenty thousand acres. Crawfish ponds have no official size but most are between ten and forty acres, and most producers manage one hundred and fifty or less acreage. Some farmers use the crawdad ponds for the growing rice, which is another major part to Louisiana’s agricultural industry at, other times of the year.
The Atchafalaya River and its river basin are extraordinarily beautiful with the swampy scenery and the animals in this scenery. This is quite amazing there are egrets and alligators which help each other in the process of symbiotic relationships. The egret benefits form the alligator because it is getting fed and the alligator benefits from the egret because he is getting the stuck food out of his teeth.
