A final area that Aveyard uses to portray the theme is in her third book in the Red
Queen series called Kings Cage. In the end of the book, Cal chooses the crown over
Mare even after everything that they have been through together. Aveyard writes “The prince is as he always has been. A good person at his core, but unwilling to act.
Unwilling to truly change himself. The crown is in his heart, and hearts do not change”(Aveyard506). Mare believes she see’s this coming since she has always spoke about how Cal is a ruler and soldier at heart. He was born and raised in the palace to rule the kingdom as the current king's first born son. By showing this, Aveyard shows how Cal is disloyal to Mare and chooses the crown over Mare. Some could say that he was telling the truth and really didn’t mean to hurt Mare when he betrayed her, but they forgot about a scene in Kings
Cage, when Maven tortures Mare and locks her in the dungeon for 3 months. If Maven truly loved Mare, then why did he torture? The is where Aveyard explains that Maven never really loved Mare and was just using her all along. This proves that Maven indeed intended to hurt Mare in his plan to take over the kingdom.
In a final thought, Aveyard portrays the theme that some people will befriend you just to reap the benefits in multiple different ways. Although some may argue different themes,
Aveyard makes it clear that only one theme fits. She uses a repetitive sentence and different scenes, such as when Maven betrays Mare and when Cal chooses the Crown over Mare to provoke thoughts to the reader and to draw attention to the theme. The
