In the Florida Everglades ecosystem, Phosphorous is the main nutrient that the South Florida Water Management District is attempting to control. Phosphorous is the same nutrient that is a contributing factor to the algae problem in Lake Erie. In South Florida, the main source of drinking water stems from underground aquifers made of porous limestone, that is refilled via the everglades(NPS,2016). In our region, the main source for drinking water for cities, stems from Lake Erie. Thus, phosphorous has an effect on drinking water in both regions.…

Ammonia is a compound composed of nitrogen and hydrogen, having the formula NH3. The ammonia molecule is formed by sp3 orbitals as it has a tetrahedral geometry and a trigonal pyramidal shape. Ammonia has an experimentally determined bond angle of 106.7°, and an a bond length of 101.7 pm. The nitrogen atom in the molecule has a lone electron pair, which gives the molecule a dipole moment and polarity. Ammonia’s lone electron pair makes NH3 a base, a proton acceptor, and gives it the ability to readily form bonds.…

Phosphorus produces algae in the water and that algae can contaminate the system. Some algae can produce harmful chemicals that will harm plants or animals that are in the water,so it would not be a good idea to swim in water with algae or high phosphorus levels.(Oram) There are simple ways to manage phosphorus like: control the runoff, use grassed waterways, maintain a healthy riparian area, reduce the number of acres in summer fallow, have a manure management plan, prevent livestock from entering water sources, and apply manure to meet crop nutrient ways. These are the best things to do to keep humans, plants, and animals safe from phosphorus.(Alberta et al.) The test result for phosphate is 0.25…

Moreover, the toxic and corrosive nature of the chlorinating products exposed to employees in the industry raises the question, “Should water chlorination be banned?” When chlorine is added to water (H2O), hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and/or hypochlorite anions (OCl-) are formed. The combination of these creates free chlorine, the most effective chlorine based disinfectant. Common chlorinating products include chlorine gas (Cl2) and calcium hypochlorite…
