The rigidness of this rule becomes more harsh when touched the ball while defending in the own penalty area by a defender. According to rule, when a player deliberately touches the ball with his hands when in the own penalty box he is red carded and his team has to concede a penalty to the opponent. This penalty results as a goal score more often than not. The rule is fair, until the player touches the ball “deliberately” but when it happens accidentally or when the player has so little time to react against the ball coming to hit his hands, they are hard done by the rule as they have to concede the penalty and subsequent easy goal scoring opportunity to the opponent, and to add insult to injury they are one-man short as the result of the player’s suspension from the match. This unfairness could lead to bad consequences, such as the suicide of the fans as it has happened in the past, mostly when the stakes are higher in the greater tournaments like World Cup, Euro Cup or the important National leagues. For instance, In December 2013, a man believed to be a fan of Manchester United Football Club committed suicide in Nairobi’s Pipeline estate after the team lost 1-0 to Newcastle. (Richard) So, the referee can give a player an official warning, a yellow card, and let the play resume and the second subsequent official warning in the same game would mean the player allowing the send-off. This would be fairer than it presently is.
Some might argue that knowing the intentions of the player can be difficult for a referee. So in that case, we could make changes in the rules such that the referee, who is already present behind the goal post to locate the goal scored, is assigned to look for the handballs within the penalty box on each side.
