Red Pandas

Red pandas are one of my favorite animals. I chose to right on red pandas because my favorite color is orange. I also like how they resemble a cat or a raccoon and they have interesting fur mainly on the tail. Red pandas, I think are very interesting and I would like to learn more about them. I also wanted to know why they are called red pandas.

Red pandas use their ringed tails for wrap around blankets to keep warm during the cold nights. Red pandas share the high altitude, rainy, forest habitat with the giant panda. Red pandas spend practically their whole lives in trees, they even sleep in trees. They are most active during the night when foraging for food. Like giant pandas, they have an extended wrist bone that functions almost like a thumb and greatly aids their grip. Red Pandas have very small litters of one or two cubs. Young red pandas will stay in the nest for 90 days, while the mother cares and nurtures them, the father has little interest in the offspring. Red pandas grow fairly slow, they reach adult size at about 12 months. Red pandas are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species because of habitat loss. There are fewer than 10,000 adult red pandas. Red pandas were actually named before the giant panda was catalogued. Where the name “panda” is from is unclear. Many people believe it comes from the second part of an old Nepalese name for these animals, nigalya ponya, which may have meant something like "bamboo footed.”

The sesamoid bone of this species resembles that of a red panda which supports taxonomic relationship placing it in the Ailuridae family, the same as the red panda. The Simocyon batelleri fossils suggest that traits such as tree living environments and hyper carnivore diets were present (Glatston, 2010). This trait which is also included in giant pandas, noting they are a different species than that of the red panda, challenge the hypothesis whether the red panda and giant panda are actually related. This is because the presence of the pseudo-thumb found in the Simocyon, is not the only indicator of common ancestry between the two species, but structure of the teeth come into play as well. Fossil evidence shows that the diet of a Simocyon would have a more general carnivorous diet instead of an herbivorous diet that both red and giant pandas have.…

On top of that, the money that the zoos make annually is not enough to cover the cost of the pandas (Washington Post 2).…
