Climate Change is severely affecting animals that rely on land and specific food sources. This is true because once an animals land is destroyed it removes their food source as well. For example the Giant Panda's diet revolves around bamboo. Now that climate change is ruining bamboo forests the panda is left with little to no food. This forces them to migrate from their low elevation habitats, to higher elevations like mountains.…

The sesamoid bone of this species resembles that of a red panda which supports taxonomic relationship placing it in the Ailuridae family, the same as the red panda. The Simocyon batelleri fossils suggest that traits such as tree living environments and hyper carnivore diets were present (Glatston, 2010). This trait which is also included in giant pandas, noting they are a different species than that of the red panda, challenge the hypothesis whether the red panda and giant panda are actually related. This is because the presence of the pseudo-thumb found in the Simocyon, is not the only indicator of common ancestry between the two species, but structure of the teeth come into play as well. Fossil evidence shows that the diet of a Simocyon would have a more general carnivorous diet instead of an herbivorous diet that both red and giant pandas have.…

In the publication, “Genetic Rescue in Isle Royale wolves: genetic analysis and the collapse of the population”, Vucetich and others explore the decline of the benefit of genetic rescue over the years in the Island Royale wolves population. The publication hypothesizes that the genetic rescue event in the Island Royale wolves was not successful due to its long term effects of increased inbreeding of individuals and decline in population size. Genetic rescue events are important since they help to preserve the survival of species. Humans are necessary to assist with gene flow to increase heterozygosity of the gene pool and increase the population sizes since species are going nearly extinct due to human impacts. This study is unique in that…

Throughout the lab, we examined bunnies in different scenarios/major events which impacted allele frequencies of the bunnies. The hypothesis for Part A was that if there is no natural selection, then the allele frequency for the bunnies will not change. This proved to be true, given that all the Generation 1 bunnies were unaffected. For example, in all charts for Generation 1, the total alleles were 100 and alleles F and f both equally had 50. This demonstrates that if the allele frequency did not change, then the bunny population had no change in quantities of alleles, proving the first hypothesis to be correct.…

For my endangered species project I chose the coluber constrictor foxii also know as the blue racer snake. I chose this endangered animal because there are very few of them and it is a beautiful species. One of the biggest reasons this animal is endangered is because they are a very docile snake that would rather flee then flight. There are many organizations trying to save this species and others like it. https://www.pinterest.ca/pin/556687203910425502/?lp=true…

Grant Application: Research into the effects of hybridization with coyotes on red wolf survival Matthew Owen, University of South Wales, UK Introduction and project rationale The red wolf (Canis rufus) is a critically endangered canid species that is endemic to the south-east regions of the United States. In the past, the wolves were widespread in numerous American states, but persecution and loss of habitat restricted them to the states of Louisiana and Texas where they then struggled with high parasite numbers and hybridization with coyotes (Canis latrans) (Brzeski et al., 2014). As red wolves are an endangered species, efforts to re-introduce the animals to the wild are actively taking place.…
