On May 10th, I had the opportunity to the “The Stony Brook Roots Ensemble. This was my first experience witnessing traditional American music played live. The venue and the ambiance were completely different from my time at the orchestra at the Staller Center. This year, our Marching Band got the chance to go to Nashville, Tennessee where we encountered the different musical culture they had. We attended The Grand Ole Opry, a concert where many talented country musicians performed live in a giant hall. It was a fascinating experience when we learned about the musician’s lives through their music and what they consider everyday aspect of their lives that we don’t have farther up north. One of the band members got the opportunity to participate in a dance off onstage during one of the breaks, something the whole band celebrated in camaraderie. A museum with all things country music, “Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum” held all kinds of pieces from various dresses and instruments of musicians from…

The sponsor used a remote-controlled drone camera and other high-tech equipment to record a synopsis of the performance in HD ("SW 32nd St. Navy Brass Band Recap"). You can feel the community environment of veterans, the local civilians in a military-dominated city, and their families gaining that sense of community through music and by the uniquely military nature of its transmission. As with the nature of the military, the specific band members rotate in and out with their tours of duty but the main instrumentation played remains, the show continues to go on, and the 32nd Street Brass Band lives on (Reichow 2017). Much with any musical culture, the main repertoire remains homestead but each new addition may add one’s own ornamentations or influence and the performance may evolve over time keeping up with the times (Reichow 2017).…
