Red Lion is taking a different approach from other schools nationwide making the walk-out a walk-in. They fear that there could be an attack on those who leave the building, so instead Student Council has planned for the protest be moved to the Fitzee Center.
“So we came to the decision that it would not be in the student’s best interests to have the whole school leaving the building at once,” Student Council Advisor, Mrs. Dennish said. “Because if people across the nation are doing these walkouts and there is someone out there who wants to do some act of evil, they’ll …show more content…
“And we will be reading a small biography of how they were involved in the community and what they did.”
Additionally, Franciscus mentioned that there will be writing prompts for the students who wish to participate in the walk-in of what could make Red Lion safer and what makes a safe school.
Red Lion has also made it clear that the protest for them is about school unity and mourning for those 17 students who died during the Parkland shooting and previous victims. They are staying clear of the Democratic gun control agenda and instead focusing on students being able to come together and work for a safer tomorrow as well as allowing for the protest to become a teachable moment.
There are over 2,000 scheduled walkouts across the nation and groups from schools as far as Ireland, Switzerland, Israel, and Mexico. How schools wish to participate is up to them and what works best for their environment, including lie-ins, rallies,
