Australian Red Kangaroo
The Animal Kingdom consists of many different types of animals, but a very unique one is the Kangaroo. This animal is known as a marsupial, who happens to carries their offspring, otherwise known as a joey, in a "skin" pouch on the front of their bodies. Using their large powerful legs, kangaroos hop from place to place. These herbivores, depending on the type can live up to 20 years. Kangaroos originate from Australia, however, they can be found virtually any place on earth due to zoos, and wildlife organizations. Of all the kangaroos in the world, the few that people are familiar with are the Antilopine Kangaroo, the Red Kangaroo, the Western Gray Kangaroo and the Eastern Gray Kangaroo. Other kangaroos that might be recognizable are the Wallabies or the very small Tree Kangaroo. The red kangaroo is a unique animal in the ways of their lifestyles and body structure. Kangaroos

Per Wildscreen Arkive, Doctor David Croft of University of South New Wales, the red kangaroo is considered “an opportunistic breeder” which means that they can breed at any time year-round if the seasonal conditions are right. Male kangaroos will fight or “box” each other to attract the females with their muscles. The females are only pregnant for a few weeks and will give birth to their new young. Croft goes on to explain that females can become pregnant only days after giving birth. Their bodies will then go through what is called diapause. Where the fertilized egg will remain in a dormant state until their first young is just about to grow out of the pouch. With all of this said, a female red kangaroo can support a joey outside of the pouch, one inside the pouch and a fertilized egg that will lie dormant inside the mother (Croft, 2010).
