The red kangaroo is among one of the many species of kangaroos that live in Australia. Red kangaroos can live in many different biomes such as mulga and mallee scrub, saltbush shrubland, arid grassland, and desert. They can withstand these extremely hot temperatures because of all the adaptations that they use. Some things that they do include sweating, panting, licking themselves, digging holes, and adapting to not needing lots of water. Sweating is not just a technique that human use to cool off, but one that the red kangaroo uses aswell. According to the San Diego Zoo, kangaroos only, “Sweat only when exercising. To conserve water, [they] stop sweating when they stop hopping, even if body temperature still high” (Red Kangaroo Fact Sheet). Panting is one of the many ways the red kangaroo can cool itself off. Their nostirls are large and increase panting. This is a good way for the red kangaroo to cool off and can be more effective than sweating. Another way the red kangaroo adapts to the heat is by licking themselves. According to a kangaroo adaptations article, this species will lick its fur. When the fur gets really wet it will evaporate and will cool the blood and help keep the kangaroo cool. (Science Web
