The red hunting hat
Beginning: “I put on this hat that I’d bought in New York that morning. It was this red hunting hat, with one of those very, very long peaks. I saw it in the window of this sports store when we got out of the subway, just after I noticed I'd lost all the goddam foils. It only cost me a buck. The way I wore it, I swung the old peak way around to the back—very corny, I'll admit, but I liked it that way. I looked good in it that way.” (17)
Although Holden's hat made him look rather typical and corny, he liked the way it looked on him. This shows that Holden did not really think about the way others perceived him.
Middle: "I took my red hunting hat […] and put it on—I

Sunny
“She crossed her legs and started jiggling this one foot up and down. She was very nervous, for a prostitute. She really was. I think it was because she was young as hell. She was around my age.”
Sunny is a very young prostitute. Holden denies sex from her and does not go down with the plan.
Sally
“She looked terrific. She really did. She had on this black coat and sort of a black beret. She hardly ever wore a hat but the beret looked nice. The funny part is, I felt like marrying her the minute I saw her.” (124)
Sally turns down Holden’s plan to run away. This sends some sense into his mind.
The nuns
“I couldn’t stop thinking about those two nuns. I kept thinking about that beat-up straw basket they went around collecting money with when they weren’t teaching my school.” (113)
The nuns are very minor within the story. They solely shows that Holden find it weird that they need the extra money.
Dick Slagle
“I roomed with this boy, Dick Slagle, that had these very inexpensive suitcases. He used to keep them under the bed instead of on the rack so that nobody’d see them next to mine. It depressed the hell out of me, and I kept wanting to throw mine out or something.”

The reader can tell he is in a heightened state of emotion because he “was sort of crying.” Also, Salinger’s repetition of the word “goddamn” expresses Holden’s anger and frustration at his current situation; getting “the ax” from yet another prep school, and being a constant disappointment to his family. This moment is significant because he puts on his red hunting hat as he commences a journey which can be seen as a hunt for himself.
