Contemporary rock band Imagine Dragons sang the line “It’s a revolution, I suppose…” in their Grammy Award-winning song “Radioactive”. Surprisingly, Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson, the main character in the book The Titan’s Curse, can relate to this line, as well as the rest of the song. Although The Titan’s Curse is a fiction book based on Ancient Greek Mythology, it shares the same theme with Radioactive, a popular rock song. Both pieces of literature show the reader that you can you can overcome your obstacles if you are willing to do it. However, Riordan uses metaphors to convey this theme, while Imagine Dragons uses imagery to represent the same thing.…

Music – Daniel Machado is writing the songs for the two musicals. I tapped him for this project because he’s particularly good at writing dense information-packed music in a way that’s easy for audiences to understand and enjoy. The tunes he tends to come up with are catchy, upbeat, and full of energy. However, the tunes almost always have the opposite effect when viewed from multiple angles over time. Since the story will unfold in layers, his approach is perfect for tackling the consent story line (The third story line most visible once the two stories are viewed together in the correct order).…

“Fuck the Police” by N.W.A is a influential song constructed by the late 90’s on the album Straight Outta Compton. The members of N.W.A survived through the hard life of the ghetto experienced the obstacles that young black males have growing up in the inner city of Compton, California. In this song, N.W.A carries a deep meaning about police brutality and says a lot about the humanity from there they came from in terms of race, class, standards, values, background, and social influence. If you think back to all the songs you heard three years ago in 2014, it’s of high chance that you think of the song “Radioactive”. This extremely popular song was sung by the famous rock band Imagine Dragons, and composed with the help of Alex Da Kid. When this track released, critics were praising every note and lyric. This number was introduced through many commercials and trailers, which was part of the reason it was a “sleeper hit”- a song that makes a gradual rise to popularity. “Radioactive” also holds the record for most weeks spent on the Billboard Hot 100 at 87 weeks.…

“Smells Like Teen Spirit” is a song originally written and recorded by the Grunge band Nirvana in 1991 on their “Nevermind” album and is considered to be one of the most influential songs the band had written during their time. One year later, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was covered by singer-songwriter Tori Amos for her “Crucify” EP. While the cover may be extremely different from the original, there are still some elements that are similar among both versions. In contrast, both Nirvana and Amos play different styles of music which would change how the song is viewed by their respective audiences. Although the lyrics, in general, are the same, the overall meaning and mood of the song is different based which artist is playing the song.…

“All Star” by Smash Mouth is encouraging song about choosing to be spectacular at what you do. The tone of the song is quite casual, written in first person and as if it was a conversation between the listener and the singer. It starts off with the singer admitting that “somebody once told me that the world is going to roll me”, and that he “ain’t the sharpest tool in the shed”. Clearly he doesn’t think that he amounts to much in the long run when it comes to following the rules and book smarts. This is furthered by him going to say that “it didn’t make sense not to live for fun, your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb”.…
