Coloration of red foxes ranges from pale yellowish red to profound reddish dark colored on the upper parts and white, ashy or slaty on the underside. The lower some portion of the legs is usually dark and the tail usually has a white or dark tip. Two shading variants commonly happen. Cross foxes have reddish dark colored hide with a dark stripe down the back and another over the shoulders. Silver foxes extend from solid silver to about dark and are the most prized by furriers.
