Red-Eyed Vireo

Biology is more complex than we might assume from an initial, superficial view of its many manifestations. When I began researching Red-Eyed Vireo population, my first impression was that the project would be creating a simple model. With an increase in temperature and less rain, there should be a lower population of species. My research advisor Dr. Church had me read numerous scientific articles about ecological niche modeling of other species and the factors use to create these models. As I read these papers, the data and results left me perplexed. The models that were used were extremely complex, often containing 20-30 different factors to create these models in attempt to predicate how population size and expansion would be affected in the future. Often in these papers, there were multiple models that were used depending conditions determine from another model when a certain ecological niche model is relevant. As I continue to read these papers, I notice that some of the species didn’t fit any of these models. Much of my original decision to go into medicine was based on my love of science and thinking that medicine is the only thing you can do with a biology degree. At the time, I didn’t know much about the experience and role of a physician and real patient care. I only knew from what I saw from television shows and how people described being a doctor online.
