In the vignette “Red Clowns”, Esperanza experiences something that will eventually help shape her life and the decisions she makes after this event occurs. The incident that happens in this vignette is truly traumatizing. Esperanza experiences one of the very harsh ways men take advantage of women. “He wouldn’t let me go. He said I love you Spanish girl, I love you, and pressed his sour mouth to mine”(100). This quote shows how Esperanza was taken advantage of and how she was struggling and feeling weak. As the story moves on, she begins to feel less like she’s weak and helpless, she doesn’t let this event keep her in the place she loathes the most. “Their strength is secret. They send ferocious roots beneath the ground”(74). Since this vignette is not towards the vignettes where Esperanza realized she had the power to overcome the challenges in her life, this quote represents the fact that Esperanza is a very strong person but sadly, she hasn’t noticed it. The trees are described as strong and persevering- just like
