Reflective Essay: A Day At The Red Bridge School

Improved Essays
About five minutes from my house, in between Holmes Road and Wornall Road, on 107th street, sits Red Bridge Elementary. A brick school that was not very big, but had a massive playground behind it spanning what seemed to be the size of 3 football fields, Red Bridge taught grade kindergarten through fifth grade. Walking in the front entrance, the office of the principal is straight on your right and there is a hallway going left and right and off of that hallway are two hallways that go straight. Down the right hallway is the younger kids such as the kindergarten and first grade classrooms and down the left hallway are the fourth and fifth grade classrooms. Each day kids pile off the bus into the school to see what the day has in store for them. …show more content…
Staltler and Mrs. Strahm, I helped with all kinds of different projects from redecorating to technology. One of the first things I notice about Red Bridge Elementary was they had many teachers in place whose sole purpose was to take struggling kids and help them one-on-one to keep them caught up with the entire class. I thought this was an interesting program the school had implemented and the more I thought about it the smarter it seems to me. Ms. Staltler and Mrs. Strahm were both great teachers that tried very hard to help each and every kid but with two classes compiled with 25 kids each, it was very difficult for the teachers to make sure every kid was caught up with everything. Multiple times a day, a teacher at Red Bridge would come and pick out a student and take that student to a separate room and teach them whatever math or english lesson they were learning at the time. I even pulled many kids out of class to help them with math flash cards or helped them with english. One-on-one teaching has many benefits over the larger classroom setting. In fact one-on-one teaching can (Clandfield).” In my experience, when I was in second grade, the larger class made it more difficult to learn because it made me feel that the teacher was not giving me as much attention as I should get. As I moved from second grade to third grade, my school lost about eight students and the size of the class was only 11 students. Even the eight …show more content…
One kid they took out for math and writing was Tracy. Tracy was a kid that was very hyper all the time. He always loved to show off for other kids and the class with his constant antics. About every other day, Tracy would go to a classroom by himself with a single teacher and she would help him with whatever project the kids were working on. For the entire duration I was there, the kids were working on a writing project where they would describe a process of how to do something. I remember Tracy was doing football because he would constantly ask me for help and try and trick me to do his project for him, but it never worked. Tracy struggled with spelling and grammar so about every other day he went to a separate teacher and took his story to her to work on it. These teachers that dedicate their time and efforts to helping the students one-on-one really makes a difference in the children’s learning.
The one-on-one teaching would be nothing without the passionate teachers that Red Bridge Elementary has. The two teachers I helped out in my two and a half weeks there was Mrs. Strahm and Ms. Staltler both who had been teacher for ten plus years. Also, both had taught every single grade at Red Bridge and most of the time they taught third grade. The funniest thing that happened the whole time I was there was two separate conversations I had with each teacher but they both said the same thing. I asked Mrs. Strahm one day

Wednesday, September 16th, 2015 I did my observation of Paul Dunbar Middle School. Some of the first things I noticed when I entered the school was how enormous the school’s population is and how the school was mostly Hispanic and African American students. I arrived at the front desk and was asked by the assistant principal what was my preference of classroom. She then proceeded to take me the section of the school where the ESE classes are held. ESE stands for exceptional student education classes.…

I am able to get involved in class and get one on one time if I don't get something that we are going over. Every teacher makes sure to tell me that there office hours and where to find them if not in the classroom. Personally it helps not having to much people in the class to interrupt the teacher and the teacher has more time to lecture about the topic. And with smaller classes I get to meet people and get to know them better as well as we get to share ideas as a ground and get to discuss things more closely.…

Long, wide roads, small houses, and steel fences were my view as I walked into an unfamiliar building called Thomas Jefferson Middle School. I did not know anything about the culture or the language; a huge chill came over me, which I have never felt before. I felt goose bumps as I first walked in the building. The building was old and was not well cared for. The colors of the walls were fading and the elevators made the sound of a dying animal when it moved.…

On Friday May 13 I was able to observe two P.E. classes at Mt. Stuart Elementary. There were two sections which I observed, first group was a 1st grade class and then a kindergarten class. It was a very cool experience, since I don’t remember P.E. classes back when I was young. One thing I enjoyed was the teacher’s enthusiasm when the students walked into the gym. He welcomed each student with a smile and with excitement.…

Growing up, I was taught at all different kinds of schools and places. The first school I was taught at was a private faith-centered school, called Saint Matthews Catholic School. Saint Matthews was an elementary school that went up to the 6th grade. In Saint Matthews, the majority of students were “white,” Hispanic, upper middle class, high class, and (not surprisingly) Catholic. Although I loved going to Saint Matthews, I could not deny that it was a very segregated place.…

I am interested in the Early College Academy because it is a great opportunity. I understand that I will have to do a lot more work here than in other schools because of the college courses, but that does not matter to me. I will still study and work hard for the duration of my time here. This is the only school in which I can knock off two years of college for free. I also like the schedule here and how it's shorter, but I understand that I will have to use the rest of the time for studying and that's alright for me because in order achieve one's goals one has to work hard and that's what I…

Under the Surface The word literacy can cause an overwhelming amount of stress in one's mind. Growing up, I have felt the pressure weigh on me even when I began to think of the word literacy. This thought of pressure and stress has caused me to become unmotivated when being motivated is the key element to reading and writing. I had it set in my mind at which there was no purpose behind literacy. I just saw it as lines smothered together and people would proclaim them as “literature”.…
