In the movie “Red Beard” we are interdicted to Dr. Noboru Yasumoto. A young doctor whom refused to become an intern for Dr. Kyojo Niide “Red Beard”. Having trained in Dutch medicinal training, Yasumoto believed he doesn’t belong to an old and poor clinic. But, through the film, he begins to realize what it means to be a doctor and the flaws that the Japanese government had for the people in Koishikawa.
The film shows the social injustice the people of Koishikawa faced in everyday life. One is the injustice for the women. In the film we meet a woman known as “The Mantis”, she reveals that at the age of nine years old, she has been molested by men that worked for her father. To add insult to injury, many of her past doctors refused to try to help her and just use her as an experiment. An inhumane injustice can also be shown when it was revealed that the government refused to keep funding the clinic and made cuts, meaning the out patients may no longer be allowed to be seen by the doctors. We are also shown the conditions in which women are retreaded in the brothels. The area where the brothels would be, are enclosed and only had groups of men guarding the entrance. The young women in the brothels would be mistreated by the older women. This lead to the young girl, Yasumoto’s first patient, to have trouble trusting people and only seen everyone as evil and kindness is nothing but lies. Another injustice are how the government had no form to help the people of the slums. Chojo, a kid whom often stole food from the clinic, has a family who are so poor, his own older brothers result to sucking their thumps. After getting caught stealing, the family ultimately decide to drink poison. No longer want to live in shame f having a thief for the son and having their children starve, the parents believed dying is the best option to end the suffering. Ultimately, before Yasumato
