Red Anymore: A Personal Reflection

As a regular, yet an inquisitive boy, I prepared myself to attend the University of Southern Mississippi with a hunger for knowledge and a thirst for meaningful experiences. I was excited and nervous at the same time to start a new academic life ahead of me. I still remember my first day of classes, and to be honest, this semester has soared in a jiffy. Running five minutes late into my first English class, I suddenly got reminded about my accomplishments once the automated doors opened before me and I was hit with a wave of nervousness regarding my unpunctuality. They say that the first impression is the last impression, but Mr. Christopher vineyard was cool and considerate enough to understand that an international student would certainly …show more content…
This paper, being the second project assigned to us, I realized that I was still naïve while I worked on it. I believe that since the submission of this paper, I’ve polished my writing skills and gained more confidence as a writer. From having to re-read the “The Only Traffic Signal Doesn’t Flash Red Anymore” three times to the understand it fully to decently writing a four-page long paper in a matter of few days before the deadline, I see my improvement and class experiences as something worth cherishing. Through the analysis paper, I’ve learned to put myself in the author’s shoe and analyze his views accordingly. I managed to decipher the central idea of the text and present my own arguments on the final draft. As a novice when it came to reading long texts or stories in general, I found the story of Sherman Alexie surprisingly interesting, and disheartening at the same time. The story did have an impact on my perspectives regarding stagnation and the importance of positive communication. My analysis on the paper brought me to a conclusion that social awareness plays a vital role in the upbringing of children. They are perhaps the most vulnerable to peer-pressure, bad social practices, and corrupt examples around

In the article Social Class of the Hidden Curriculum of Work, by Jean Anyon, discusses the different social classes in school rooms and the student-teacher interaction. The Working class focuses on following the steps of procedure, and are looked upon as the worst treated school environment, the Middle class focused on getting the right answer and were not allowed any decision making on their own, the Affluent Professional school focused on individual thought and expressiveness, and is very focused on the children being creative in their learning, and the Executive Elite school focused on developing ones intellectual powers, and produced work that was the top academic quality, which people viewed as the best educated class setting. One thing I thought was really interesting was in the Affluent Professional school, Anyon says, “The work is creative activity carried out…

Entering the double-doors to start my 11th grade year evoked different emotions than had previous first days of school. The commencement of my freshman and sophomore years were nerve wracking, of course, yet an underlying excitement to see friendly faces had maintained my spirits. However, as a junior, my classmates were now off in their AP and honors classrooms, and I, in a state of ambivalence, was embarking on a new challenge: the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme. My integration into this community, honestly, took a prolonged amount of time.…

Self Identity in Society Today, Americans tend to look inside themselves to find some basis of identity. People tend to look internally and ask themselves whether something “feels right” as their basis for making good decisions or ask themselves, “how did I do?” Their personal identity is wrapped up in their place in society and how well they interact and communicate with other people. In Fleming’s chapter “Piaget on Moral Development”, Piaget 's studied children in different age groups and believed their moral judgements developed based on scenarios, interactions in game playing as well as comprehension of rules. While Baumeister in the article “The Self and Society” believes that roots of identity and moral decisions begins with the awareness of one’s body and experiences which form the basis of the psychological self.…

It is first day fall and English class is about to begin. Like always, I am the last person to stroll in and I sit in my usual seat, the chair neighboring the door. The teacher welcomes me with his normal, accented hello as I sit down and he starts discussing about correct MLA format. My mind begins to get distracted and my thoughts take over, causing me to dose off. I start to gaze at the other students in my class…

Driving up I recognize the Gustavus campus but only as an outsider. I never paid much mind during tours as I assumed I would never have the financing to afford to come here. My car was “fully” loaded and as I unloaded I saw my pile of two bins and my medicine draw compared to the mountains of other people's belongings. I never felt like I has no possessions until then. I have been living on my own for years and only bought essential items.…

When growing up a child must feel like he or she is empowered throughout their lives, unfortunately they face many difficulties of feeling like they have any control involving their childhood. Though what is giving children empowerment, or even a simpler question would be, what is empowerment? Metzger states the definition of empowerment in her book: Empowerment is a process that strengthens and activates an individual or group’s capacity to satisfy their own needs, over their life.1 It is a multi dimensional social process that helps people to act on issues they define as important.2 Relevant to youth, empowerment is defined as an attitudinal, structural, and cultural process whereby young people gain the ability, authority, and agency to…

When talking to friends and family about their college careers, a commonality in the conversation occurs. When I ask what the biggest regret they had, the most common answer is that they never took a semester abroad. As a junior Public Health major at the University of South Carolina, I believe that this is the best opportunity to expand my horizons. Considering that Denmark is one of the happiest and healthiest countries in the world, it would be a privilege to study Public Health at the Danish Institute for Study abroad. Core courses including Health delivery and prioritization in Northern Europe, would provide an insight into the public health of Northern Europe and allow me to understand the keys that make this part of the world so healthy.…

Franklin D. As a recent graduate from high school I knew I didn’t have all the material I needed to proceed as a college student; however, I wanted to take the advantage of my education. It was a eerie feeling the first weeks of college. Being in this class I expected to grasp the information and develop an enormous package of study habits.…

As the semester is coming to a close, it is only appropriate to reflect upon my first semester of college. I may not attend a highly prestigious university, however attending a community college still allows me to continue my education. I come from a school where our English department was not the best, but thanks to my persistence and hard work I managed to secure a spot in the International Baccalaureate Program, a program that excels in developing students in all subjects. That being said, English has never been my strongest subject, often times I struggled with my writing throughout high-school. For the most part, most of my papers were deemed to be below college level, a fact that has always puzzled me.…
