Recycling In California

Furthermore, Californians tend to wonder why they should recycle. They probably are familiar with the term “recycling”, but perhaps do not know what to recycle. A report released by IPSOS observed that only 50% of the whole American population recycles on a daily basis as more than 10% of Americans completely not involved in recycling practices (Ali). Therefore, there should be a priority to seek to bridge the existing knowledge gap. For instance, recycling involves reusing waste materials or products to produce a new product that is actually the knowledge Californians understand and yet, the environment around them is pathetically suffering from their irresponsible behaviors, such as waste disposals, deforestation, and water pollutions. In Garbology: Our Dirty Love Affair with Trash, written in 2012, Edward Humes, a Pulitzer prize and PEN award winning journalist and author in California, educates his readers on the economic, social, and environmental issues revolving around the waste. Humes begins his novel by describing landfills and the struggles many face with maintaining them due to incorrect sealing, being uneducated in waste management, and making excuses. Humes determines that the only way to “fix” our mess is to change our behaviors and become less wasteful. In part one of Humes novel, Garbology, he informs readers of the landfill, Puente Hills, the largest active dump in the country, and the hazardous materials, such as “leachate”, that is infecting the area of Los Angeles County (25).…

In No Impact Man, Colin Beavan discusses many important topics, one of which is about trash. This topic got my interest because we see it everywhere, Colin goes into detail and discusses a lot of facts about it. An interesting observation was made regarding the black color of trash bags, that the reason trash bags are black instead of transparent is because people do not or cannot deal with seeing what is inside of them. Another related topic that always gets my concerns is recycling our waste. There are a lot of people that don’t recycle and just don’t care.…

It is a designed routine for Americans: People go to work to make money, go home, sit on the soft, and watch T.V. The advertisement sells the idea of the products you own are out of date. Then people get up, buy the new stuffs, throw away the “outmoded” products, play with the up-to-date products for a while, and go to work again. Most people try not to be left behind, because the culture of Americans, consumption, offers its folks social satisfaction. However, most people have never thought of what the products they throw away can do to the environment.…

Every day people toss out several things mindlessly, it’s become a habit to throw things out once they lose their value to the consumer. Have things always been like this? No, there were times where the people made the most use out of whatever they had, reusing it until it was impossible to continue. This consumer mindset can’t just be stopped, but there are things that can be done to lessen the impact of this mindless disposal on the environment and people. Our generation has been told that if we do not recycle, we will live in a world of waste. The world will be destroyed from all the harvesting of resources, and costs will soar because of the expenses that comes from extraction of raw materials. The author of “Recycling make greens go gaga, but it’s a real burden for the rest of us,” William Shughart II, argues the opposite. He says that the reharvesting of the raw material is more cost efficient and more environmentally friendly than the recycling and reprocessing of the once used plastic and glass. Shughart is correct in saying glass is more effective to remake rather than recycle because of the natural abundance of sand.…

Americans embody approximately 5% of the world’s populace, but produce nearly 30% of the world’s garbage. I generate quite a bit of waste on a daily basis, however, I repurpose or recycle most of what is thrown away. Items that can be recycled are placed in certain receptacles. I have a compost to take care of food items and there are items that I repurpose into other functional things to use around the house. As much as I like to live a green life, I do have my moments of throwing away things into the trash that I forget to recycle.…

There is one planet that is inhabitable, so as humans we should do everything in our power to make the Earth sustainable. As many think recycling promises a brighter future for our planet, they are quite frankly being deceived. We are more likely to drive ourselves into the ground by funding recycling than to just leave the garbage to, quite literally, rot in its own filth. To some people recycling is just a lost cause, but to many others’ it has wedged its way into becoming a part of his or her lifestyle.…

Being informed, and caring about the importance of reduce, reuse, and recycle is key to understanding why recycling is so important. Being proactive now will benefit not only the environment, but future generations to come. The underlying importance as Nedra McDaniel claims, she always assumed that her trash was sorted somewhere before it entered the landfill. Municipalities in the USA and indeed around the World are generating growing numbers of plastic waste than ever before and the facts are that only a small percentage of it is recycled. In many developing countries plastics and other byproducts litter streets, drains, rivers and much of that ends up in the oceans. In the USA, the EPA estimates that the municipal solid waste stream contains more than 12 percent of plastic. This figure has grown consistently over the past fifty years, from one percent in the 1960’s. Additionally, the EPA estimates that as consumers are buying increasing amounts of plastic only 8 percent of it gets recycled because the plastics industry almost never uses recycled plastics in their products, unlike what obtains in the the glass and…

In everyday life, we can see green sign everywhere that reminds us of the environment. The color green gives us the motivation to save the Earth. The first step to approach the goal is to recycle. “According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, more than 75 percent of material destined for a landfill could be recycled” (Go Green, 12).
