Recycling is hyped for the positive impact to the environment, but the impact to the economy is also important to note. Among the economic benefit of recycling are the creation of jobs, building of competitive industries, reduction of disposal fees, retaining of local employers and so forth (EPA). In August 2006, a report released by the South Carolina Department of Commerce showed the economic summary for the previous year in regards to the recycling industry showing that 37,440 jobs were supported with $1.5 billion in personal income impact, production of $69 million in state tax revenue, and a total economic impact of $6.5 billion. The report further estimated that had all the common recyclables available been recycled, the state would have seen cost savings as high as $30 million (EPA).
