Each institution has its recruitment policy and maintaining a staff that allows them to provide the services required by its clients. Since nursing is a service that 24 hours are required, a provision has to be done and have the staff necessary to meet the needs. Nurse-to-patient ratios can improve nurse staffing, recruitment and make workloads more manageable (Allen, 2013, p.20). Staffing patterns and the method used vary both in the centralized and decentralized personnel has to cover all shifts and provide quality services. The decentralized staffing has the strengths to provide greater autonomy and flexibility, the staff are able to take requests directly from their manager and the manager take control and it can reduce or increase the …show more content…
The employee feels more secure and stable, it is more cost effective for the institution and the manager is less leaves time for other tasks. Its limitation is not as flexible and not based on the needs of the employee and the manager is less responsible of the personal budget control is if not committed to the staffing. Every institution needs a responsible person to keep the staff necessary to provide services where is not affecting patient care. The employee will decide based on their personal needs to the type of staffing which belonging without forgetting that the service provided can not be affected, we must be responsible with the institution and especially with the patient. The employee can say what time is the one that most fits their needs. It is very important to properly categorize patients as this category is used to determine how much staff necessary to provide services. It was totally inappropriate by Susan release administrative aspects to investigators and even worse to the media.
I believe that the decision taken by the administration to fire Susan was right, given that she also jeopardized in the first place the patient, then their staff and ultimately to the institution, which will be seen by all as one that does not offer quality services and does not provide the staff necessary to provide services.
Every nurse should have that same standard, level of care & level of service, 24/7 (Eschiti & Hamilton, 2011, p.6). The service to be offered to patients has to be the same regardless of the shift. The patient requires the same assistance 24 hours a day and is the responsibility of the manager to schedule the staff and have the staffing necessary to meet these needs. Inadequate staffing also produces overloaded in the employees who end up in dissatisfaction, making errors and sometimes quitting. When the managers are short staffed like for sickness absence they need to rely on temporary staff to meet the services demands (Hurst & Smith , 2011, p.287).
