Recruitment and Retention Initiatives The shortage of healthcare professionals in rural areas is an ongoing problem that is likely to become an even larger issue. Current utilization patterns predict there will be a shortage of 45,400 primary care physicians and 46,100 subspecialists by the year 2020 (Grover & Niecko-Najjum, 2013). This is attributed to the growing and aging population, longer life expectancy, and expanded access to health care. Rural communities are particularly underserved and vulnerable. Half of the world’s population lives in rural and remote areas, but only one quarter of the world’s doctors and less than one third of the world’s nurses serve this population (Buchan, Couper, Viroj, Khampasong, Jaskiewicz, Perfilieva …show more content…
These facilities offer superior patient care and structural components, which include: open communication, administrative availability and responsiveness, decentralized decision making, personnel benefits, staffing and scheduling and diversification (Lee & Nichols, 2014). Transforming Pocahontas Memorial Hospital into a rural magnet hospital will drawl in talented physicians and nurses, while creating a sense of cohesiveness and ownership. The close working relationships, personal growth opportunities, and work satisfaction from being able to make a big difference in a small community will assist in employee retention. In addition to dealing with low health statistics, the rural hospital struggles with a lack of resources, specialized care, and a high population of citizens who wait too long to seek health care. Increasing the capacity and capability of the hospital could be accomplished by adding a satellite medical clinic. It would improve accessibility to care for the 942-square-mile county.
