Recreational Therapist Program Goal Setting: Case Study

The agencies, recreational therapist program goal setting is done primarily using the APIE (Assessment, Planning, Implementation and Evaluation) process. My supervisor is the only recreational therapist at the agency and when goals are decided she then informs the other directors so that each program specialist can focus on them throughout the seasons. Some of goals that are set include providing campers with the best overall camp experience by increasing their socialization and allowing them to participate in as many different activities as possible. The agency does not have any strategic plan in place to help achieve these goals. The activity specialist at the agency are some of the main contributors in achieving these goals by providing meaningful and engaging recreational activities. After every week of camp the goals are reevaluated and written reports are submitted online as well as printed out and handed out to the families to take home. We also print an additional copy and place it into the camper file for future references. Each counselor provides an oral report to the campers parents when they get picked up about how the camper was throughout the week as well as what they did. Additional reports that are completed are done by our directors and they are written after every camp season about the overall quality of camp experience. When the goals are set for the week they are then shared among the departments and are reviewed during the weekly Monday meetings. After discussing the agencies goal setting procedures my supervisor explained to me that it works well most of the time, but at times if we had a strategic plan it would be more proficient as well as run smoother.
