One of the most prominent drugs in the past couple decades is making its imprint in todays most talked about debates. Marijuana is steadily making its comeback and is on the rise among all ages across the United States. Recently states have chosen to take it upon their legislation to legalize medicinal and recreational marijuana. Being at a stable level also means in any way cutting down the 18 trillion-dollar debt that we keep piling on top. At some point America is going to have to go out of its way on solving that huge of a debt. On top of all that we’ve been looking for several different cures to heal patients suffering from various symptoms all across the nation. Marijuana may be part of the answer to help America in both the short and long term. Not only is there extremely vast amounts of money behind this type of industry, there is also health benefits that go along with it. Medicinal marijuana has proven time to time to help the symptoms to cancer patients in many different occasions. The fact that recreational marijuana is becoming more popular in the later generations becomes a significantly healthy alternative to tobacco, alcohol, and most other drugs. The legalization of marijuana could certainly give it a significant jump start. In an article from Pediatric News it claims that, “states that have already legalized it have seen revenues in the billions. Marijuana cash crops are estimated at $14 billion in revenue” (Pearce). Numbers like that are definitely something we shouldn’t just be putting aside. The government would also be dropping expenses they shouldn’t have been paying in the first place. Jon Gettmen’s study from Pediatric News states that, the prohibition of marijuana alone costs the government $113 billion, while it costs taxpayers $31.1 billion each year” (Pearce). Not only is the government saving extra funds by legalization, but so are the working taxpayers each year. If we were saving money in the first place and gaining money as a result, then why hasn’t it been legalized everywhere already? Getting a law like this passed through legislature becomes extremely difficult with many political parties against it. Although after research behind both recreational and medicinal benefits lots of minds are being changed and are starting to understand the significant benefits that outweigh the negatives.
