Recovery: The Rest of the Story
Reflection essay by: Alexander Wynne 09/10/2016 During the process of intensively researching my article and its contents I have come to the conclusion that I have learned and reinforced what I had already known. I will give the presentation tomorrow and needless to say this information comes natural to me. I have lifted for three years and now and concerned about diet, nutrition, sleep, and reducing stress levels now more than ever since I am in college and Army ROTC. However, there were quite a few concepts that I never realized or considered to be beneficial til researching this article. Those concepts include: the benefits of thermotherapy, manual therapy, neuromuscular electrical stimulation, and how adversely recovery is effected without proper

I do also agree with the author, yet, I thought there were fragments that were missing and that the article was too concise. The author did get their point across to the reader which is the main goal. I felt as if providing a background about anatomy/physiology is extremely important so the parasympathetic nervous system fits perfectly with rest and recovery for that is the subdivision of the autonomic nervous system responsible for rest and recovery. I also feel as if the section of the article on periodization plans could be condensed to just training plans and their positive effects, however, the author mentions an exceptional point reflecting on setting realistic goals when devising a training plan. Also I feel another piece may possibly be missing such as delayed onset muscle soreness. The author lightly touches on soreness and its adverse effects but I think the points of recovery would be portrayed much more effectively if the author went into depth with what, how, and the effects that soreness has on the body. Nevertheless, the author has exceptional points on lifestyle conditions

American Olympian, Gail Devers once said, “Sometimes we fall, sometimes we stumble, but we can’t stay down. We can allow life to beat us down. Everything happens for a reason, and it builds character in us, and it tells us what we are about and how strong we really are when we didn’t think we could be that strong.” In Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken, the determined Louis Zamperini proved Devers’ words. From reading the book Switch: How to Change Things when Change is Hard, I decided to write myself a destination postcard for something I have long missed since moving to Reno to attend college; riding a motorcycle to train and compete in the sport of motocross. I was forced to sell my last motorcycle in 2009, seen in the postcard above, when I moved to Reno for college. Now that I am nearly finished, I have decided to focus on obtaining a new bike (a major elephant motivating reward) and getting back to a proper level of health, strength, and fitness to mitigate any chances for further jeopardizing my risk for re-injury. To accomplish this change process, I have worked to script my critical moves, develop action triggers, tweak my environment,…

In the article, “My enemy’s enemy is my friend” it talks about a case study done at the University of Texas by two people of the name Elliot Arson and Vernon Cope to test a hypothesis that people will like people who dislike the same person as them, or like someone if they like the same people as them. This runs off of the theory that some people may believe that because they share the liking or disliking of someone that they are similar people with the same values and beliefs, this can be derived from the balance theory. When considered, this hypothesis is easily thought of to be accurate. With this hypothesis, there can be many other hidden factors that can play into these situations.…

This paper doesn’t suggest removal of systems currently in place, but rather a more personalized fitness regimen for Soldiers with similar physical goals or issues. Currently Soldiers throughout the Force are required to participate in two physical fitness (PT) session a day due to either Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) failure or Height and Weight failure. These Soldiers of course need extra help, but why is two PT sessions a day not the standard for every Soldier? If more time was allotted for Soldiers to do PT daily there wouldn’t be as many people currently on the Remedial PT Program. If a Soldier demonstrates their ability to perform PT on their own they should be allowed to take part in a second PT session at some point during the day.…

I walked out into the parking lot where my dad always picked me up from football practice. As I got closer, he got out of his car and walked towards me. He put his hands on my shoulders and said, “she died.” For as long as I can remember my mom was sick with cancer. My curiosity led me to her doctor’s appointments, where our family physician answered my questions about radiation and taught me how to give my mother insulin and take her blood pressure.…
