With the new rights for freedmen and Reconstruction, many became angry. Although it did not seem a matter for which to be angry, some had different views. The anger met a point to which six former Confederate soldiers decided to from a secret society. It would soon be known as the the Ku Klux Klan. In the klan, members would pretend to be the ghost of dead confederates to deal with revenge on enemies. In brief time, members would spread throughout the South and would attempt to remove the rights of blacks; in addition, they pledged to defend the “superiority of whites.” With the ex-confederates and plantation owners, the society attracted merchants and professionals. Having goals, the klan called for its overall leader- “grand wizard”- to be Nathan Bedford Forrest. Nevertheless, the electoral vote had been disputed*. With that issue, Congress held a commision that would solve the question of the election. Though, with Congress having a great number of Republicans, Haynes had been victorious. But, to the Democrats’ fortune, they had a sufficient number of people to reject the decision. To completely settle the problem, the parties settled a deal which would become known as the Compromise of 1877. In the compromise, the Democrats would allow Haynes to be the president, but he would need to remove the federal troops in the South and support appropriations for the rebuilding of levees along the Mississippi* River. Additionally, he would need to grant subsidies to Southern railroad. And, with this Compromise, Democrats would develop control in politics, thus ending Reconstruction.
