Imagine that one day, you hear that someone close to you dies, but nobody knows how; or do they? What would you do? Reconstructing Amelia is a book about a mom named Kate, and her “goody-two-shoes” daughter Amelia. Amelia gets in trouble at her prep school, and Kate is instructed to pick her daughter up from school. When Kate gets to the school, she sees something she never expected. There are many emotions throughout this book such as sadness and complete confusion in this disheveled situation. In this journal, I will be questioning, predicting and evaluating. Now, I will be questioning a few aspects of the book. The very first question that comes to mind at this point in the book is how did Amelia die? Some people are saying she jumped off the roof but

We don’t hear much from Amelia directly in the novel, but there are definitely some personality traits shown. I see Amelia as a smart and well behaved teenage girl. She is seen as a preppy girl in the book, and rarely gets into trouble by authorities. The reason I see her as smart is because she goes to a prep school, which is good. Kate is the mom of Amelia. She is caring and worrisome. She is caring because she cares a lot about her daughter, considering she sent a note to the school proving that Amelia didn’t cheat. In this journal, I questioned, predicted outcomes, and evaluated characters. As you can see, most people in the same situation as Kate would be stressed and anxious. Do you still think you would react the same as what you initially thought you would? Or after reading this journal, have you taken Kate’s side with

The bullying that Amelia is subjected to from this club is one of the factors in Amelia’s supposed suicide. Additionally, the reader is given the third person perspective of Kate’s journey to learn if her daughter really did jump or is she was pushed. McCreight was able to present these altering perspectives in a manner that blended well and did not add confusion for the reader. Along with her timing of when to reveal certain aspects of the story she used different mediums that the characters would have used as communication platforms to develop their emotions. For Kate it was journal entries as well as emails that she sent when she was first pregnant and it was anonymous blog post about herself and classmates, text messages and facebook post-similar to the example from the novel below- that helped McCreight to convey Ameilia’s…

“‘Forget how it looks. How does it feel (79)?’” This question, posed to Conrad by Dr. Berger, in Ordinary People, by Judith Guest, accentuates one of Guest’s themes that creating illusions is damaging in times of loss. Ordinary People, focuses on the Jarrett family, Conrad and his parents, Beth and Calvin, in the aftermath of the accidental death of Conrad’s older brother, Buck, and Conrad’s subsequent suicide attempt. Rather than confronting the pain and loss, the family, led by Beth’s desire to appear ordinary, perfect, and healed, throughout the book, spends most of their time trying to mask their pain to each other and the outside world.…
