Laura is preparing how she can tell a lie because she does not wear shoes, the text says: “I hurt my feet... mountaineering, I’ll say” (p. 8 l. 4). It is not the only time Laura lies, she also lied to Vernon she told him: “I’ve grown some onions in the garden, and I had an interview last week” (p. 9 l. 64), the reason why she lied is that Vernon and her marriage is falling apart. Laura is 22.48, and she cannot live with 22.49 because 22.49 remains unreconciled. But somewhere out in the world, there is a perfect match for 22.48. After Laura has figured it out it is not only Vernon there have moved on, definitive have Laura also moved on. She is ready to move on, and find the perfect match. The main theme in the text could be “moving on after a divorce”. In the text, the reader is taking on a journey, where you are following the miserable wife, who is fighting for their marriage, but most acknowledge that her husband has moved on. It is really hard for her to understand the divorce until she compares her and Vernon whit to numbers there are so close to each other, but still so different that they are no the perfect match.
