Recognizing Individual Student Learning Needs and Developing Strategies to Address those Needs Criterion three of the Teacher and Principal Evaluation Program is “Recognizing Individual Student Learning Needs and Developing Strategies to Address those Needs” (CEL 5D+, 2014, p. 5). This criterion stresses the importance of looking at each student as an individual learner with different learning abilities, academic background, and personal needs. Teachers should create lessons and differentiate instruction by looking at the individuality of each student. As teachers become efficient in teaching each student according to their needs, students learn more, performance and achievement increases, students become more aware of their own learning and progress, and students are better prepared for college (Conley & French, 2014; Fuchs, Deno, & Mirkin, 1984; Fuchs & Fuchs, 1998; Tomlinson et al., 2003). Criterion three includes six sub-criteria. This section will provide a description and empirical evidence to support the following six sub-categories: teaching point(s) are based on students’ learning needs, ownership of learning, strategies that capitalize on learning needs of students, differentiated instruction, teacher use of formative assessment data, and student growth goals.
