People are highly influential to each other, and kids are even more impressionable. The climate of these family meals is important because it directly affects the children. Fiese and Schwartz mentioned that if a parent is particularly pushy on what is on the child 's plate, it has a major impact on eating disorders. From the nursing view, this may be one of the most important points to emphasize to patients. In the early stages of a child’s life, there are tools parents can use to make dinner more enjoyable for everyone. The TV may be on until the child has developed enough social skills and self-discipline to sit for a longer dinner. When the TV is turned off, parents should start giving the children more responsibilities involving meal time, such as: helping plan meals, food prepping, and setting or clearing the table. The table conversation should also progress to more world related news and what is happening in everyone 's individual lives. A stressful eating environment could cause overeating in a child, which could relate to diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, and other comorbidities later in life. Companies are working towards making products that require little preparation, on-the-go meals/snacks, and quick clean up. This may appeal to the hardworking parent and seem like a reasonable purchase, but the foods are not as healthy because they are not fresh ingredients. Although they are in a sense attempting to help busy parents, there are negative effects. In the United States food advertising is second largest to automobiles (FTC 2008). Advertising is targeted towards children because children can reach their parents. The purpose is for the product to be appealing for the child. They also misrepresent their product to sound healthier than it is, tricking the parent into thinking it is a smart choice. Products are placed lower on the shelf to be kid level, and false advertising for “fat free”, “all natural”, and “real juice”, these are ideal for people to consume, but they are not true. However, companies can advertise their products like this as long as they meet the requirements to be labeled as such. Marketing has one of the biggest impacts on the household, and therefore should be one of the priorities that need to be reformed in order to benefit families.
