Reflective Essay Of Reciprocity: A Personal Experience

Last week, as I was walking around Somerset, in search for dress I could wear to attend a wedding… a slim, beautiful, tall and well-dressed lady approached me right outside the train station, before I was able to cross the road. Initially, I waved my hand at her in a manner to show my disinterests. However, she persisted and asked if she could just have 5 minutes of my time. The lady, who then address herself as Jenny then begin to make small talks with me and asks for my name. After that has been established, she asked me about my day and then complimented my nails and outfit. When this happened; I automatically took a quick glance at Jenny and then I complimented her on her good complexion. After much deep thought, I now think complimenting her back was a wrong move because thereafter, she thanked good nutrition for the flawless …show more content…
During my experience with Jenny, this feeling of reciprocity was rather prominent. Despite not knowing Jenny prior to this meeting, I still felt the sense of indebtedness towards her when she complimented me. This relates very well with one of the features of reciprocity where it states that the rule enforces uninvited debts. Just like the “Joe and the Coke” experiment by Regan (1971), where others might not want the initial favor of getting the Coke, I was okay with the fact if Jenny did not complimented me as this made me feel the need to repay her back.
During my conversation with Jenny, there were several times that I felt pressured to agree to her requests without further analysis. I felt a sense of indebtedness towards her just because she did something “nice” for me. This experience with Jenny felt really uncomfortable, especially when I did not ask for such favors because then I would feel the need to do something nice in return, which might trigger unequal exchanges according to Cialdini

Jonathan Haidt tells us that reciprocity is the key to solving all of our solutions in life. Using reciprocity in situations is like Matthew 7:12 where it says, “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets (KJV Bible).” Haidt explains that this should solve most problems, but I disagree in some ways. Yes, I believe that when someone does something nice for you, you should do the same. I believe that Haidt is right in saying this because using reciprocity in this situation will keep people happy.…

Similarities in Tales of Captivity in 17th Century North America Writings by Mary White Rowlandson and Pierre-Esprit Radisson, colonists taken prisoners by the natives in North America during the 18th century, help to show the similarities in the situations experienced by those captured. One similarity seen in their experiences is that they each found natives that gave them mercy when they each were in desperate times of need. Also, both narratives show how captivity often brought out the darker sides of those kidnapped, and their writings display how they try to chalk up their actions as necessities of their dire circumstances. Similarly, Mary White Rowlandson and Pierre-Esprit Radisson were witnesses to the types of punishments natives could…

“All Our Kin” is an ethnography written by Carol Stack discussing her experiences in The Flats, which allowed her to develop three theoretical perspectives to help her organize data based of that particular location. These perspectives are: how people are recruited to kin networks, the relationships between household composition and residence patterns, and the relation between reciprocity and poverty. Within these eight chapters, Stack compares and contrast cultural stereotypes amongst black culture and explains survival tactics that residents of, The Flats, must go through in order to make it through poverty. The purpose of kinship is defined by the community’s beliefs and principles that are analyzed by Stack incorporating herself and her…

At its core, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a story that deals fundamentally with the concept of reciprocation, something which constitutes a sort of transaction between two parties to reach an end (whatever that end may ultimately be). As established right from the beginning, the entire narrative of Sir Gawain focuses on a type of violent “game” that requires reciprocation, as offered by the figure of the Green Knight. As Sir Gawain progresses, we see various scenes of honor and manner that are not all entirely what they seem; in reality, the initially appealing nature of these scenes ultimately flips, becoming shallow and deceptive. Under this idea, I plan to argue that the concept of manners within Sir Gawain is inherently flawed; though…

As an incoming freshman in August of 2015 taking Rhetoric 105, I not only learned how to take apart papers, summarize, paraphrase, analyze and construct passages, but overall to be a great thinker. There are many ways that a person can tell you that works to become a better thinker, but it starts within you. While writing papers this fall semester, I learned that my writing became better when I a. understood what was being asked of me via the criteria, b. allowed myself to make mistakes in order to understand what I was and wasn 't doing correctly, c. I started to question myself, not in a way of was the work too hard, but in the sense of what the assignment and the thesis I am creating is asking. At this stage, you have to be completely real…

Introduction Many Jewish people lost their lives during The Holocaust, a tragic event which Jews were killed because they were so called a “disease”. Although this was happening everywhere in Germany, a Jewish girl named Anne Frank said this quote, “ In spite of everything, I still believe people are really good at heart.” Even when she faced the toughest decisions anyone has ever made, she still looked to see the good in people's hearts even though they took family, friends, and loved ones. That is why I am agreeing with Anne’s quote that people are really good at heart. One of the few reasons why I am agreeing with Anne is her kindness shown at Hanukkah.…

Paying it forward or giving back has always been my motto to live by since I was a teenager. I believe I had picked up this quality from my mother. At an early childhood age, I couldn’t grasp or understood why my mom was so kind to everyone that she encounters on a daily basis and especially strangers. She would even open her door to strangers in order to help them get back onto their feet. She truly believes everybody in the world are related to one another, we all are one big earth family.…

For my first breaching assignment I decided to do the “no greetings” exercise. I executed this exercise a total of four times with four different people. The first was an in-person encounter with a male stranger, the second and third were two separate phone calls with my mother and father, and the last was an in-person encounter with the person I am dating. Through the experiment I realized the impact, or lack there of, a greeting has and how expected the behavior has become. I was able to draw some distinctions amongst the reactions.…

In the critique “Egoism and Altruism,” Louis P. Pojman strongly rejects the idea of Ayn Rand that everyone should have and egoist morality by explaining the “false dilemma” created between egoism and altruism. He explains that her idea of egoism stating that she believes “selfishness is a virtue and altruism is a vice.” He argues that while some egoist traits are morally necessary, such as self-love and self-interest, they should not be brought about or acted upon at the cost of someone else’s happiness. The idea that one ought to “love thy neighbor as yourself” means to treat everyone with the same respect and dignity that you treat yourself with, not to harm a stranger for your own happiness or joy. He argues against Rand’s theory by stating…

Concerns have been raised in the 21st century about the young adult’s slowing transition into adulthood. Robin Henig discusses these concerns in her article “What is it About 20-Somethings?” by writing on the topic of emerging adulthood, a period before adulthood that sociologists believe may be a new distinct life stage. Henig addresses the idea that young people in America have put off the traditional milestones such as completing school, leaving home, becoming financially independent, marrying and having a child. More recently, technology and the use of social media have become popular and prevalent among young adults and children, a point Maria Konnikova brings up in her article “The Limits of Friendship.”…

I thought the Survey of Character Strengths was an interesting survey to take. My first and second strengths were not particularly surprising to me, however my third was not what I necessarily expected it to be, but I am certainly not unhappy with it. All three strengths are values I have always admired because I have grown up watching my parents and older siblings showcase all three. I have consciously tried to emulate their example regarding these strengths and it was intriguing and encouraging to see all three show up in the survey. I was glad to see which strength showed up as my top, as kindness and generosity are especially important to me.…

Stereotype is defined through certain associations or beliefs that group entire assemblies of people together with certain traits or characteristics. Prejudice is explained by negative feelings towards other people based on their membership or connection in specific groups. Discrimination concerns behaviors, particularly negative ones, directed against individuals because of their membership in a particular group. Stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination all operate independently, but they often influence and reinforce each other. An example of prejudice in the film, Schindler’s List, is portrayed while Amon Goeth and Oskar Schindler are shaving their faces.…

Roloff, presents a series of norms in the Social Exchange Theory, and there are four that we adhere to. First, the norms of reciprocity, which dictates whether resources must be exactly the same or just similar. Norms of reciprocity “refer to how the initiation of giving resources starts. People may initiate a relationship and give resources without any expectation of return” (Heath and Bryant, 2000, p. 232). For instance, when we first became friends, I would lend Jeremy VHS tapes and he would lend some to me in return.…
