Receptionist Position

Decent Essays
I originally applied for the receptionist position at Great Clips, at the recommendation of my former stylist, who worked for the salon. I knew that it would be a great way to earn some hands on experience in a salon, before and while attending cosmetology school. However I didn't realize how much I would benefit from the position. Not only did I have the chance to gain customer service experience, I had the opportunity to observe everything from haircuts, styles, and perms. Working in a salon has increased my passion for cosmetology and has helped me gain experience that will hopefully lead to a stylist position at Great Clips in the near future.

In the ethnography, The Cocktail Waitress, by James Spradley and Brenda Mann the waitresses conform to many of the gender roles, stereotypes, and stratifications that their wider society puts on them. They rarely challenge these cultural norms and expectations because nobody wants to question tradition, they want to be considered good waitresses, and most of all the men at the bar inforce the social norms put on the women. The first reason why the waitresses conform to many of the gender roles, stereotypes, and stratifications that their society puts on them is because nobody wants to question tradition or the way things have always been. In the text it states, “No one at Brady’s thinks to suggest that a male could be hired to work as a cocktail…

The Mind at Work, written by Mike Rose is a story about day-to-day jobs that people partake in for a living, his main purpose of this story was to make people aware of the need to take notice of forms of intelligence that have not been tested through IQ tests and bring various things together like how the brain and hand can not be separated, they work dynamically. In this essay, I will go over the key points that I thought Rose wanted his readers to understand also, what I disagree with and agree with and also how the hand and brain work together. I found that the first couple of chapters in the book went over the key points rather than the last couple of chapters, Rose explains that all work has some sort of skill required to do the job…

My first job was one that I had foolishly not considered an 'actual job' until the first day of training, and then another, more prominent realization the first couple days as I started. I applied to work in a position called a Camphand at the summer camp I had been going to for a few years, Camp Chrysalis. Fresh out of my junior year of high school, this was an exciting new opportunity for my peers and I to start working at camp after being a camper in an age appropriate setting. In my head, things had reversed for the better in comparison to the past. Instead of having to pay to go to camp, I was now getting paid to be at camp!…
