What types of rebel groups are more likely to engage in peace negotiations with the government during armed conflict? Are certain types of rebel groups more likely to have successful peace negotiations that lead to a termination in armed conflict? Unfortunately, we know very little about how the institutional characteristics of rebel groups affect prospects for peace during armed conflict. I argue that rebel groups that have a political branch or a political party are more likely to enter into peace negotiations with the government as these attributes signal to the government the rebel group is more likely to be accepting of resolving the conflict via political channels.
