Rebel Cool Analysis

Improved Essays
The concept of cool tends to vary in ideas that relate differently to objects, persons, and personalities. From an excerpt of, “Rebel Cool”, authors Quartz and Asp mentioned a new concept of cool: rebel cool. The foundational myth of cool is something that goes against the prescribed societal norm, which can be considered as rebel cool. As Quartz and Asp stated, “Cool follows the signaling logic of social selection” to show how the idea of rebelling against the social establishment is a “cool” notion within itself (176). To transcend the expectation that society has of an individual in order to become an outlier appeals to the individualistic urges of the human psyche, channeled through basic human emotions that may not correspond well to society

Laura Mishkin’s “The Problem with Being Hip”, an article published in The Daily, claims that in society people want so badly to be above mainstream culture that they’re isolating themselves and becoming their “image”. Mishkin lists numerous experiences she’s had with the youth that’ve been absorbed into the ironic subculture, and emphasizes the irony of how being ironic “is fitting in by proving you’re not trying to”. Furthermore, Mishkin analyzes how the at the root of this trend is insecurity, that being a “byproduct” of the social media makes people feel accepted but in reality, Mishkin asses, “alienates” those who don’t live ironically from those that do. Altogether, Mishkin drives her point home when she showcases how she too falls prey…

During the decades of coketown industrialization, profits flowed to the factory-owners, and wealthy entrepreneurs who made up a small portion of society. As a result, workers worked in harsh conditions, and faced constant poverty. The significance of Fordism is that it gave workers higher wages, spreading the prosperity of industrialization to the masses, and marking the beginning of consumerism. J. R. McNeill describes this best when he writes in his book Something New Under the Sun “Ford saw that sharing these gains with his workers suited his own interests…he paid laborers enough to buy a Model-T… They enjoyed an affluence and leisure that in the nineteenth century would have required an army of household servants” (Pgs 316 & 317).…

We have all heard a million times about nerds and geeks but do we actually know the meaning of those words? Leonid Fridman evokes his thoughts about America’s wrong ideology when referring to people who are fervent in achieving academic success. The author utilizes definition, comparison and contrast, and synecdoche in America Needs Its Nerds as rhetorical devices to rectify society’s view of nerds and geeks. Fridman includes the real definition of the word geek to make understandable how America is being ignorant by calling a person names just because it was heard somewhere else. He alludes to the Webster’s New World Dictionary definition of geek, which is “… a street performer who shocks the public by biting off heads of live chickens.”…

Trends most often are first popularized by a small group of “cool” kids, or as Gladwell refers to them, “Innovators.” Gladwell utilizes an extended metaphor in order for the audience to better understand the argument the author presents. Gladwell takes a complex idea, the popularization of trends to the point of saturation, and simplifies it by comparing it to a familiar and easily understood concept, the spread of communicable diseases. Such as the case of Hush Puppies, the shoe brand initially targeted towards the “older” crowd. Though not marketed towards this group, younger, hip teens began to wear these shoes because they knew that most…

Dr. Mraovic-O’hare, As I previously discussed on a classmate post, Nick has been manipulating Amy from the beginning of their marriage. He wanted Amy to be someone who she was not (even though that is how she presented herself at the beginning for their relationship), as you stated, Nick dragged Amy to Missouri to save his mother, but unfortunately it was too late; lastly, Nick ‘convinces’ Amy to use the last of her trust fund to open his bar. Moreover, Nick had control of Amy by her insecurities, which she outlines her complains in one of her monologues, “…Being the cool girl means I am hot, brilliant, funny woman, who adores football, poker, dirty jokes, and pburping, who plays video games, drinks cheap beer, loved threesomes and anal sex,…

As a noun, “punk” is defined by Merriam-Webster as being “a petty gangster, hoodlum, or ruffian; a rude and violent young man.” When used as an adjective, the same word means “inferior.” Members of this culture are depicted as the “bad kids” who fail to contribute to society and are most-likely destined to be the occupants of prison. In fact, “punk” is also a slang term meaning a “young man used as a homosexual partner especially in a prison.” When one hears the word “punk,” images of violence, the color black, and obnoxiously loud music are generated; these associations are typically viewed as being unfavorable, but they are simply characterizations of a vital subculture developed from the absence of secure institutions.…

“All Star” by Smash Mouth is encouraging song about choosing to be spectacular at what you do. The tone of the song is quite casual, written in first person and as if it was a conversation between the listener and the singer. It starts off with the singer admitting that “somebody once told me that the world is going to roll me”, and that he “ain’t the sharpest tool in the shed”. Clearly he doesn’t think that he amounts to much in the long run when it comes to following the rules and book smarts. This is furthered by him going to say that “it didn’t make sense not to live for fun, your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb”.…

One of the most fascinating aspects of human language is the development of slang: expressions that people take from standard English (or whatever native language) and completely change the meaning of to signify something completely different! These words and phrases are essentially inevitable to encounter when living in a dynamic social society; it’s easy to assume that the vast majority of Americans have heard such words as “cool” when referring to something as interesting, or the phrase “hanging out” used to mean spending time with one another. A few words have come up just over the past five to ten years that sparked my curiosity; my main question being, “What do certain slang words mean to people of different age groups?” While most slang…
