In this essay, Rebecca’s low mood in the postpartum period has been analysed using Gibb’s Model of Reflection.
The process of reflection is used to intellectually explore experiences in order to enhance knowledge and understanding for future practice. (Husebø, O’Regan, and Nestel, 2015). Therefore, when approaching a challenging situation, such as Rebecca’s mood in the postpartum period, reflection can be an extremely effective tool. (Lew and Schmidt, 2011). Reflection aims to build confidence (Smith and Yates, 2015) by encouraging midwives and students, to become more self aware and provide optimal and humane care, rather than applying guidelines and rules without any thought (Oelofsen and Lintern, 2012).
