In order to be able to voice both the opinion of girls of color and police officers the author took a trip to Miami. One of the opinions that one of the girls had over all the negative stereotypes was “They [officers] don’t expect much from black girls; they expect us to do bad.” The powerlessness in the face of who officers who carry these attitudes is all too clear for these girls: “They have a gun at their side, and we’re young. … We’re just children.” (Epstein 1). Hearing a child talk like this is really upsetting. Children should feel safe around law enforcement, not scared. Everyone has the right to voice their opinion regardless of what color you are. We as parents expect for our children to be safe in school. We trust the faculty with our children’s lives, and law enforcement should not be taking advantage of their power. Children will be children, there is no need for mistreatment. Action has already been in process with boys of color, and now girls of color are being taken in consideration. Epstein mentions in her article that, a foundation that is really interested on making a difference in girls of color life’s has invested $90 million to help them out (1). Not only is there foundations helping out, congress also wants to make a change. Epstein mentions that “Congress has announced a new Congressional Caucus on Women and Girls; the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention recently released policy guidelines to improve the treatment of system-involved girls; and the White House Council on Women and Girls, formed several years ago, is now engaged in important efforts to highlight issues relevant to girls of color” (Epstein 1). Effort is being made to help this girls be accepted into society regardless of their color. Proper training needs to be done in order to teach this police officers to treat children of color right.
