“Why?” adverb, often used as an exclamation expressing surprise or indignation, used by 90% of the youth when confronted with wearing uniforms. When I was in middle-school, if I was not wearing a dress I was wearing a uniform. (A tucked in teal or white polo shirt with black or khaki pants. Girls could alternatively wear black or khaki skirts if she so chose to. Dresses were alright as long as shoulders were covered, and the hemline did not pass above relaxed fingertips.) In the middle of my second year at that school we were not allowed to wear jackets that were not completely one color. This may not seem like the worst happenstance, but there were some serious drawbacks. A well put quote to illustrate this is from George Carlin “Don’t these schools do enough damage making all these kids think alike, now they have to make them look alike too?” Uniforms have no academic benefit, They are also highly impractical, financially detrimental, and have little impact on bullying. …show more content…
For these reasons, students should not have to wear uniforms. Uniforms as a stand alone do not lessen bullying and disguise the real bullying problem. As Tony Volk, PhD, Associate Professor at Brock University, stated "Putting on a set of clothes doesn’t change a child." He goes on to talk about how kids have plenty of resources to draw from to bully others other than clothes, stating “Bullies are

The education students receive in school are supposedly an enlightening experience that teaches students the main concepts such as math, english, science, and history. But the writers of Rethinking Schools disagree, specifically the writers of the subsection Multiculturalism and Anti-bias education. The lack of attention towards a diverse learning environment teaches the students to discriminate on race and specific gender roles. A diverse environment can change over time or can either stay the same, based on interviews and articles one would say that there was no improvement. The educational and home environment does not prepare students for a global and multicultural community.…

The enforcement of uniforms also makes it more difficult for students to subtly identify themselves as gang members; this also increases the safety of schools. The principal from a school where uniforms have been implemented said, "now, no one is looking at shirts with graffiti or wondering if what [students] are wearing is affiliated with a gang or worrying about someone 's designer sweatshirt” (Boutelle, 2008). This statement indicates that there are at least some positive changes coming out of kids wearing uniforms at school. Some believe that the enforcement of school uniforms reduces the ability for students to express their religious beliefs. In school districts were uniforms are enforced there are exceptions in place for students…

The consensus among teachers is that a few hours of testing simply cannot be used to judge a student’s ability. How can a few tests cover enough of the curriculum to be considered a fair test? A high school teacher claims1 that ‘[w]hat [the students] study … is not linked to any current learning or life experience’ and that ‘[t]hey cram for a week or so and then forget about it.’ The tests are of no use simply because they do not cover enough of the right material. This demonstrates how out of touch NAPLAN is with the rest of the educational system. The items tested will be of little use because real life is not multiple choice, and does not involve questions like those on NAPLAN tests.…

Once we used them on weekdays, we couldn’t use them on weekends because it would look silly and preposterous wearing it. Therefore this proves that school uniforms are a total waste because frankly no one with a right mind would wear their school uniform outside of school is they didn’t have to. Which means that the school uniforms are just a waste of money. All in all, school uniforms from my perspective, will not be such a bright idea for my school or in any school. As I have said before, school uniforms are no help whatsoever.…

The study concluded that overall the crime rate dropped 91%, sexual offenses were reduced by 96%, and incidents of vandalism went down 69%. The huge reduction in problem areas led school officials to believe that improvements were solely attributed to the new uniform policy, however, there is a gray area not addressed in their conclusion. Nowhere in the study is there an assessment of why these reductions took place, or what variables influenced these behavioral changes. Another flaw is the study did not include the other policies and practices that were implemented during the two years of research. A research study needs to take all factors into account; otherwise the study is flawed and not scientifically valid.…

I was right. no, my new home was not as big nor as fancy, but I discovered that was not a setback. Although the resources were not directly visible nor as easily accessible, I learned that obstacles did not exist for students there. Most, if not all, of the students had the same hunger for knowledge as I had. This summer my school announced that the building which we had been using had fire code violations and we could not return to our building in the fall.…
