Reasons Why Schools Should Start Later Essay

Mandatory Change Have you ever gone to school and almost fell asleep because of how early you had to wake up? Schools simply start much too early in the morning and they should begin much later on in the day. I chose to provide facts about just why this is because I am one of those students with a wistful yearning for more sleep. This affects all teachers, parents, school staff, but most of all, students. Schools need to start much later on in the day than they currently do because there would be less traffic for commuting parents, students thriving in school instead of dozing off, and less tardiness and school absences.
School should start later on in the morning because everyone is on the road at the same time, so if a few schools would start later, there would be less traffic so the traffic breaks up for everybody. “The latest transportation studies show that the average American spends 36 hours a year stuck in traffic jams.”

“Later start times can mean less missed school — absences dropped 15% in Bonneville County, Idaho, after it instituted such a change.” (latimes.com) If attendance is increasing by schools having a later start time, then they learn that they must attend things preparing them for later on in life. “Overall results showed a boost in attendance, test scores and grades.” (startribune.com) It’s proven that the schools who changed the start time to later on in the day saw less absences and tardiness. "We’ve seen less tardiness and, this is anecdotal, but happier students," (usnews.com) When people vote for something, the winning side is always where the majority stands, correct? So, if all of the students not only are not late but all of them are happier, shouldn’t majority rule to say that there are so many benefits, why haven’t schools already made this change years
