Reasons Why Mr Ewell Lied In To Kill A Mockingbird

While reading the chapters, I began questioning why Mr. Ewell lied. One reason why I believe he lied was because he does not like African Americans. He, along with many other people in the town, do not think Atticus should be defending Tom. Tom does not deserve a fair trial; he is a black man and Atticus is one of the best lawyers in town. He deserves a bad lawyer. Mr. Ewell’s daughter is the opponent to Tom and Atticus and I would want Atticus to be my lawyer. Mr. Ewell is determined in his ways and he seems to think he can get whatever he wants. He is not on the best of terms with some of the people in town because of the way they live. Their kids should not get education; they should work. They created this hole for the rest of the United States that eventually they would have to crawl out of. Mr. Ewell looked down at the colored people and thought they deserved nothing. They should not get to experience life’s greatest pleasures. They are like animals to him they do not have human personalities or characteristics. During the Tom Robinson case, even though Tom should have won, he did not because of the color of his skin. Mr. Ewell already knew before the case that Mayella would win because she was white. Even if Mr. Ewell lied about what he said and what actually happened, he still knew he would win the case. Furthermore, he lied to protect himself. The first reason Mr. Ewell wanted to protect himself was because he wanted Tom to be guilty. Again, Mr. Ewell thought his daughter was going to win the case. There was no way in his mind that Tom, a black man, was going to beat a white woman. In his mind he was superior and having Tom spend the rest of his life in jail did not bother him one bit. Even if Tom lost his life because of Mr. Ewell’s lie, it would not bother him because he broke the rules and deserves to be
