Genetically modified food has been a very controversial topic in the United States for many years. The sale of genetically modified foods began in 1996 (Walia), and since then the use of GMOs has skyrocketed. The use of GMOs should be prohibited in the United States because GMOs are harmful to human health, they are bad for the environment, and there is not enough research to know if they are safe. Arjun Walia points out, “There is no possible way that our health authorities can test all possible combinations on a large enough population, over a long enough period of time, to be able to say with absolute certainty that they are harmless.” This is a scary thought, GM foods should be researched more before considered to be “safe”. Some countries have started to ban GMOs the most recent to consider banning them is russia, the truth is we just do not know enough about GMOs to know if they are safe or not. (Walia).
