At Mount Gilead High School for your freshman and sophomore years you were quite as can be but still the same hard working, doing everything your told to do, young man with a smile that lights up the room. People look up to you when they need help. You are there for them when you can. High school taught you, like I said, to be yourself and you don't need to fit in, but to just be yourself. It also has taught you life may not go the way you planned. All you have to do is adjust to what’s going on around you and not to give up. Just keep moving forward. You will become stronger not only physically but also mentally. As an adult I would like to build and race cars for fun, and try to make a job out of it if possible. Anything is possible just remember anything you put your mind to it gets done so just keep moving forward. Don’t let anything get in your way of accomplishing your dreams. High school was either going to help me make it or break it. Bell High School was not among the top high schools in my district. It was known for its high drop out rates, teen pregnancies, and gang violence. As I rushed to school attempting to finish my homework because I was not able to finish while babysitting, I always herd “Hey come take a hit “or “ look at this new product, try it out”, we all wanted to succeed, but nobody wanted to put in the time and effort to divert us from the wrong paths. Unfortunately, this led may students towards drug addictions and gang violence.…

Starting high school is an overwhelming feeling as it’s the last four years of schooling where it was time to look at my strengths and weaknesses in order not to fail. I never really thought that hanging out with friends would change my focus on school. Although I had every intention to pass all my classes, peer pressure got to me to where school wasn’t important anymore. I wasn’t an A straight student nor was I good at sports, but I never intended to fail any courses. Even though I didn’t pass all my classes, it was the fact that when I failed them, it was my parent’s disappointment where I truly felt like a failure.…

A dilemma that I faced, and still am facing is simply the decision about what I want to do with my life after my high school career. In my freshman year of high school my goal was simply to get through the year in one piece. I was forced to conform to my new environment and all the strict rules that came along with it. Along with that it was the sudden transition from being the "big dogs" as eighth graders at my middle school to being "fresh-meat" in my first year high school. With so much attention placed on me as a freshman like on the varsity basketball team, where I was constantly forced to prove my worth to the coach and the players, to stepping out of my comfort zone and performing in a mandatory play for the rest of the the school as…

Growing up I had to remind myself of this, and now as I'm getting ready to start college I realized just how true it really is. If a problem seems to be unsolvable, try a different approach, never give up. If all else fails, start over, the next go around you'll have a stronger foundation. As long as you remember to never give up on your dreams, you can shoot above and beyond anything imaginable.…

In Ian Frazier’s essay “In Praise of Margins,” he sees marginal places and activates valuable. The very word marginal to Ian Frazier has a simple meaning of a “negative tinge” (Frazier) where it is defined as actions and decisions that are non-goal oriented, or without purpose. In Frazier’s Own life, a marginal activity and a place for him and his friends were out in the woods as it was there “part-time address, destination, purpose, and excuse” (Frazier). However, growing up Frazier and his friends had the woods as their marginal activity which was often seen by society as unbeneficial. But, from an academic perspective, I agree with Frazier that marginal activates are important.…
