National ADHD Awareness Week and Month is a nationally recognized event to help bring knowledge and awareness to the disorder. This is a great event to not only bring awareness to it but also to bring knowledge about it and how to help those with it. It started as just an awareness day in 2005, was made into a week in 2013, and finally became a month long observance in 2013. They host many events, seminars, and fundraisers during this time. These can be free, donations only, or paid events. Anyone wishing to attend one of these can research and find local events in their area. When we raise awareness of these mental disorders then people not only become more aware of what they are, their causes, and their symptoms, but they are also educated on how to deal with, treat, help, and spot them. Many people often think that individuals especially children are just unruly and spoiled children who just need to be shown who is in control. They feel that if they just took medicine or had some discipline they would be fine. This is not the case however. These children and individuals need more than that if they are going to survive in a community that is set out against them rather for them. This is another reason and need for ADHD awareness not only during the week and month but year round. These organizations wish to help educate, inform, and give more knowledge to the public, educators, and other parents about the disorder to help them have a better understanding of why the child is behaving like they are, how to help them, and how to support them. CHADD’s mission statement should actually be Americans mission statement on ADHD "CHADD improves the lives of people affected by ADHD" (CHADD, 2016). Everyone should do this they should educate themselves on ADHD and then seek to help improve these individuals lives by supporting them to strive for whatever they want.
