He is a black man who lives in the town of Maycomb, Alabama. Tom can be considered a good citizen. He does not steal, drink, curse, or look for any trouble. He is a working man looking to provide for his wife and kids. One day on Tom’s commute to work, Mayella Ewell asks Tom to help her move a wardrobe. Showing his southern hospitality, he is ready and willing to help. While moving the piece of furniture, Mayella forces herself onto Tom. Blacks were seen as sub-humans. People did not treat them equally and often showed hate towards them. Many times black people would work hard and stay quiet to keep from danger. Even so, they were not treated fairly and many times would be verbally or physically attacked for their skin color. They were frequently seen working blue collar jobs and earning below average wages. They were happy with chance for work and did nothing to disrupt it. The same is presented with Tom’s employer. Many black people were like everyone else as they were trying to provide for themselves and their family.
