Obviously when anyone exercises frequently, they are to see improvements in their bodies. Intense sports like basketball, soccer, or cross country can easily lead to maintaining or losing body weight and gaining muscle. This can lead to having a higher self esteem and a better body image. With this comes a better mindset. Riordan states, “Sports teach girls goal-setting and the satisfaction of reaching your goals” (1). When a girl has been playing sports her whole life, there is no better feeling than achieving a goal. Some girl athletes have put in countless hours playing their favorite sport, just preparing for the time when they can reach the goals they have been wanting for so long. These feelings can prevent stress and depression as well. Not to mention, most female athletes are also student athletes, so not only do they have to focus on sports, but also on their school work. As many know, one cannot win all of the time. As a matter of fact, one might face failure more than winning. To illustrate, in the article titled “5 Real World Skills that Sports Teaches Us” from Briarcliffe Blogs, it further illustrates the lessons any athlete, not just females, will learn while participating in athletics. Briarcliffe Blogs describes, “Losing is almost as important as winning, because everyone will fail at something in life. The important thing is to learn about the failure and to use it to your advantage” (1). Many coaches highlight on this point saying how in life, there is always going to be failure, but one needs to learn from these and move on. Learning from mistakes is a valuable lesson. Also while playing sports, athletes are very familiar with the sacrifices they make. Shana is a four-sport athlete and absolutely loves it. With these sports though, she has learned she does not have much time in her schedule for hanging out with friends, or simply just relaxing at home. She is constantly answering her friends texts to hang out with “sorry, I have practice!” or “I have a tournament, maybe some other time?” Yes, she gets annoyed that she is busy, but she knows she would not trade it for the world.
