One of the main goals of the Committee for Public Safety was to construct a way to stop civil unrest throughout the country and drive back foreign armies threatening to invade. The Committee solved the latter by introducing mass conscription throughout the country in order to bulk up the military force. This policy focused predominantly on men aged between 18-25 and caused the number of young, able bodied workers in the workforce to plummet. Despite precautions taken by the committee to prevent economic strife Frances position on this matter continued to worsen as it did before the execution of Louis XVI. We also already know that they sought to solve the unrest throughout the country by arresting and executing specific social and political groups. The foreign armies were driven back but civil unrest had worsened and Frances economic position was weak, food supply was lower and chaos was widespread. The Terror did nothing but make things worse for the people of France. Camille Desmoulins said about the revolution as he awaited execution beside Georges Danton in April 1794, “I shall die in the belief that to make France free, republican and prosperous, a little ink would have sufficed – and only one guillotine.” Desmoulins was a supporter of Danton and childhood …show more content…
